According to Hart Mortuary in Macon, Albert P. Reichert, Sr., the father of Macon Mayor Robert Reichert died Thursday, February 16, 2012.

Mayor Robert Reichert became the 41st Mayor of Macon on December 12, 2007. He began his second term on December 13, 2011.

His father,
...more Albert, was born January 25, 1914, in Columbus, Georgia, the son of Jacob and Ann Phillips Reichert.

He graduated from Lanier High School in Macon, where he was editor of the school annual. With the help of Reverend Ed Cook, he enrolled at Emory University in 1932 and worked at various jobs to help pay his way through college. He was a member and president of SAE social fraternity at Emory and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He later was inducted into the Emory Sports Hall of Fame.

He then attended Duke University and on December 22, 1936, married Elizabeth Walton Bowen from Macon, who was then a student at Duke. He received a Master's Degree in Philosophy from Duke in

"What's killing our city to me more than DUI is copper and metal thefts," said Macon City Council President James Timley.

 Strong statements from Timley took over part of the Public Safety committee meeting Monday. During the meeting, Police Chief Mike Burns presented the city's
...more 2011 crime statistics and said last year's increase was due to thefts.

That led Timley to question why Burns has more officers on his DUI Task Force than fighting metal thefts.

"To me, the biggest problem in the city would be metal and copper thefts because it's killing our economy," said Timley.

He says Macon Police should work to dedicate more manpower to fighting such crimes.

Police Chief Mike Burns debated that statement saying, DUIs kill more people and cause more monetary damage than any crime. He says he's seen the effects first hand.
