More than 100 people from Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Canada attended Saturday's U.S.D.A.A. Sirius Dog Agility Show at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry.

They tested their dogs' jumping skills and agility on a series of obstacle courses.

Prizes ranged
...more from $20 to $1,000 and the competition featured a variety of skill levels, from beginners to masters.

Competitors say the best part of the day is cementing their bond with mans best friend.

"When you run well with your dog both of you are in sync and you hit and it all works right, it is just a rush, it is just like competing in anything," says Elaine Boris of Watkinsville.

"The bond you get when running your dog in agility is absolutely incredible," says event coordinator Meryl Sheard. "You can't be a good team unless the two of you are a good team together."

The event is open to all breeds and will be open until 4 p.m. Sunday.

A Monroe County man repeatedly drove his Ford Explorer into a Monroe County Sheriff's Deputy's car, damaging the vehicle and causing minor injuries to the deputy.

Spokeswoman Allison Selman-Willis says deputies arrested 24-year-old Michael J. Thurman and will charge him with
...more aggravated assault, interference with government property and criminal damage to property and reckless conduct.

Selman-Willis says it happened early Saturday morning after Deputy D. Ruiz was dispatched to 1850 Charlie Benson Road in response to a civil disturbance.

When Ruiz arrived, the release says he saw Thurman get into his car. Then Thurman allegedly put the car in reverse and struck the front of the deputy's patrol car before circling the vehicle to hit it again.

According to the release, Thurman then followed the deputy's car as he tried to exit the drive way, hitting the rear of the patrol car.

Ruiz was able to escape and call for back-up and suffered

Shaw Bullington and her 5-year-old twin boys read from a book of Christmas stories, the children's rapt faces illuminated by the soft glow of a Menorah.

It's a typical holiday season in their Bibb County home. Bullington is a practicing Christian. Her husband, Richard, is
...more Jewish.

She says a lot of thought and long conversations went into the decision to raise their children with both faiths -- and so far, she says, it's working.

"We give them a lot of both," says Bullington, with a laugh. She casts a glance around the living room decorated with Stars of David and Santa Claus. "As you can tell by our home, it's over-inundated with both."

She recognizes that, to some adults, their decision seems confusing.

"I know that it's a fear of my husband's family that the Christian side of the holiday season is going to take over, you know? And then the Christian side of my family is worried that the Hanukkah, the Jewish side, will take

State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler says Georgia's dip in unemployment rates is bucking the national trend because it reflects actual job growth.

We interviewed Butler by phone today. Listen to the audio above.

Experts have attributed some recent drops in the nationwide
...more unemployment rate to the chronically-unemployed quitting the job search.

But Butler says the decrease in the preliminary unemployment rate from 10 percent in October to 9.4 percent in November is the result of hiring.

He says businesses in the Macon area made approximately 1,100 new hires in that period.

And the best news: He says they aren't seasonal, but long term positions in industries such as health care, financial services and hospitality.

"It's a very diverse employment number," says Butler. "Our numbers are going in the right direction, for the right reason."

Butler says before the recession Georgia's economy was experiencing strong growth

Macon City Council voted to nominate former state Rep. David Lucas, former mayor C. Jack Ellis and community activist Lindsay Holliday to the committee that will oversee spending from revenue raised by the new SPLOST.

Bibb County voters approved the extra one-percent special-purpose
...more sales tax last month.

Macon City Council Clerk Joyce Humphreys relayed word of the city nominees for the Macon-Bibb SPLOST Oversight Committee.

Bibb County Commission Chairman Sam Hart proposed the concept of an oversight committee during the campaign to get voters to approve the SPLOST.

But Hart says their service is purely "advisory," and they won't have the ability to access the SPLOST money.

Mayor Robert Reichert asked the council to propose the city's representatives on the panel. The committee is to be made up of three members nominated by the county and three from the city.

Reichert says the committee is responsible for overseeing the

Councilman Henry Gibson says after attending nearly every committee and council meeting since he won the Ward 2 Post 2 seat, he's ready to hit the ground running.

He says he sees "personal agendas" interfering with council work as the biggest issue right now.

He says he's
...more concerned some council members don't lend a critical eye to legislation proposed by Mayor Robert Reichert.

During his time on council, he says, he hopes they will judge legislation on its merit, not its sponsor.

As a 35-year veteran of the Macon Police Department, he says he wants emphasis on creating a more "community oriented" police force.

He says he agreed with council's decision not to pass Police Chief Mike Burns' hiring plan crafted in response to a surge in shootings involving young people.

"No amount of money" can solve the city's crime problems, he said, unless the community trusts and has a working relationship with the police patrolling their

Twiggs County Sheriff Darren Mitchum says two deputies set a new record for drugs seized under his command as the result of a traffic stop.

Sgt. Jason Smith and Deputy Marcus Baker pulled over three Savannah natives last Thursday on a minor traffic violation.

Mitchum says
...more after his officers noticed the strong scent of marijuana, they searched the car and found 6.6 pounds of cocaine and 43 pounds of marijuana.

He says the drugs have a street value of about $375,000.

They arrested 33-year-old Joivanni Latrell Russell, Jamal Romell McGruder, 28, and Drashawn Lamont Johnson, 21, on drug trafficking charges.

The group told deputies they were on their way from a party in Jonesboro to Savannah.

Some of the pot on display was vacuum-sealed and Mitchum says he believed it was hydroponically-grown.

Pointing to the shrink-wrapped bricks of cocaine, Mitchum said he could make out a crack-cocaine "cookie" inside the package.

Stephen McDaniel, the man accused of murdering Lauren Giddings, pleaded not guilty Monday on child-exploitation charges. These charges stem from digital images of child pornography that investigators say they found in McDaniel's apartment.

SLIDESHOW: Stephen McDaniel December 12
...more Arraignment

The Superior Court's chief circuit judge, Martha Christian, presided at a hearing that started and ended within minutes at the Bibb County Courthouse.

With McDaniel, his attorney Floyd Buford, and prosecutors huddled at the judge's bench, Buford offered to waive a formal arraignment and reading of the indictment and enter a plea of not guilty. McDaniel signed a plea document but did not speak publicly.

McDaniel was indicted in November on one count of murder and 30 counts of child exploitation.  District Attorney Greg Winters has said he will seek the death penalty in the murder case. Winters and assistant district attorney Nancy Scott Malcor represented
