A bill is making its way through the Georgia House of Representatives that would require all public schools to have at least two personnel trained in diabetes care.

State House Bill 879 was drafted in response to rising percentages of students with Type 2 diabetes.  The Center for
...more Disease Control in Atlanta says around 13 thousand people under 20 are diagnosed nationwide each year.

Under the bill, non-medical staff members would receive basic skills training to help them recognize diabetic emergencies and help administer medications and insulin to students.

On Eyewitness News Mornin' Wednesday, Stephanie Susskind and Randall Savage shared comments from Democratic State Representative James Beverly of Macon on why he supports the legislation.

Julie Deese, a Diabetes specialist with the Medical Center of Central Georgia's Diabetes HealthWays also talked with us about the special needs a student on insulin faces in the school environment.

The city of Perry wants local artists to paint the town one manhole at a time.

Their program called "Lids for Artists" lets people design manhole covers around the city.

Mayor Jimmy Faircloth says anyone from beginners to professional artists can participate. He says artists
...more must first submit their idea to the city council. Once the design is approved, the artist can get to work.

Faircloth thinks the painted lids will bring the community together. He says, "We will have a listing in the Perry Arts Center of the different covers and where they are located. So, people can go out and have a good time trying to find them."

Three lids have been painted so far, one by Chad McMurrian and two by Alicia Pruitt.

Pruitt says she hopes her lids will show others that anything, even manhole covers, can be turned into a work of art.

She says, "I think it will bring more people out and about to see what Perry has to offer."

Spring is still a few weeks away, but severe weather can strike Central Georgia ahead of schedule.  Twenty-one tornadoes have touched down during this time of year since modern record keeping began in 1950.

A majority of the storms formed in second half of the month when winter
...more gradually transitions to spring.  With only a few exceptions, most of the tornadoes touched down during the afternoon and evening hours.

As is generally the case, most of these tornadoes were weak with five F0s, and seven F1s.  Seven reached the strong F2 level.  Only two were classified as severe F3s.

February tornadoes caused 3 fatalities and dozens of injuries.  The most damaging storm roared through Peach County in 1975.  Here's a list of each tornado with a brief summary of the impacts.  The information originates from the storm event database of the National Climatic Data Center.

The head of Warner Robins Air Logistics Center is "cautiously optimistic" that they can cut more than 800 jobs without layoffs.

WR-ALC Commander Gen. Robert McMahon spoke to 13WMAZ's Lorra Lynch Jones about how the president's budget may affect Robins Air Force Base and about the
...more status of two job-cutting moves at the base.

First, the base is trying to cut 452 jobs as a result of Air Force-wide budget reductions announced last year.

McMahon said 238 employees accepted voluntary separations last year, and another 108 took buyouts in a second round early this year.

He believes that another 71 workers will take the buyout package, and that a new contract to build F-15s for Saudi Arabia and job growth in other areas will allow them to shift another 35 jobs. That would get them to their goal of 452 jobs.

Meanwhile, the base is trying to get another 365 workers at the 402nd Maintenance Wing to apply for early retirement or early-out
